Pavement Graffiti
These paintings have been developed from photographs (taken by Sam Webster) of small areas of pavement containing graffiti and miscellaneous detritus. Each one has its own unique quality. I like working from something previously seen as insignificant or ephemeral. I use acrylic paint on small, square canvases (mostly 8"x 8").
The pavements of London are a rich source of graffiti. Some people choose to mark their existence by writing names and initials in wet concrete. They are surprisingly specific in their use of punctuation and idiosyncratic spelling. These can be funny, touching and very inspirational. I like the random words and names, misspellings and punctuation so I reproduce those accurately. Then I use the rest of the image as a starting point to use paint and colour in a freer way.
